Bishop XLUMEN vs. Power Wand Advanced: What’s the Difference?

While both machines share Bishop’s signature German Faulhaber motor architecture and Critical-powered smart battery interface, the XLUMEN is fundamentally re-engineered to solve lighting and visibility challenges that may exist at the skin surface.

Built-In Precision Lighting: Most machines leave you at the mercy of harsh convention overheads or dim studio corners. The XLUMEN integrates an optical ring around the cartridge receiver to flood the needle tip with glare-reduced light—eliminating the need for bulky, battery-draining headlamps.

Fuller, Ergonomically Balanced Grip (37mm): To incorporate internal light routing without compromising balance, the XLUMEN features a wider 37mm diameter (compared to the 30mm diameter of the Power Wand Advanced's grip). It provides a meatier, anti-cramp grip favored by artists who prefer a larger hand feel while doing long sessions, keeping the center of mass centered in your palm rather than pulling forward.

Dedicated Lighting-Bus Interface: Because the XLUMEN's battery manages both variable motor power and dual-temperature LED circuits, it uses a dedicated pin connection. (Note: Standard Advanced battery packs will not illuminate or drive an XLUMEN, and XLUMEN batteries cannot be mounted onto standard Power Wand bodies).

Light Passthrough Grip Engineering: Unlike solid aluminum or standard opaque disposable grips, the XLUMEN ecosystem uses specially molded, optical-grade clear light channels integrated into their grips designed to preserve full light transmission down to the cartridge tip.

Please note: The XLUMEN and Power Wand Advanced Batteries are not cross compatible. The XLUMEN machine has a larger power draw and due to the increased diameter of the contact points, will not accommodate the smaller PWA battery. The Power Wand Advanced has a smaller contact point and the XLUMEN battery will be too loose on it to hold contact.

Available Configurations

Three models with different use cases are available--Shader, Packer, and Liner--all crafted with premium components:

The Shader's 3.5mm stroke is optimized for black & grey realism, ultra-smooth gradients, layered shading, and delicate needle configurations. Use it to do multiple passes, very fine linework, and anything requiring a softer touch.

The Packer is the ultimate all-rounder, with a harder hitting motor and a 4.2mm stroke tuned for bold color saturation, solid black fills, and medium-to-heavy traditional work. Use it for line work, color packing, run it lower for softer work and higher for bold lines.

The Liner is direct, punchy, and relentless. The 5.0mm stroke is built for pulling single-pass lines with zero snag or bog down. Use it for single passes on big, bold lines over 9RL.

The Power Wand XLUMEN battery powers the machine for approximately 5 hours with a running light, or up to 8-10 hours without the light. Color coded splines (center ring) tells you which Wand you’re using at a glance.

Doing so will violate your warranty - we recommend cleaning your machine with cold sterilization techniques with germicidal agents like Madacide, as well as wrapping and bagging your equipment before use
