Tips for Practice Skin

No material is a perfect, directly replacement to human skin, which even differs person to person. This is the main reason a slightly different approach is often needed when stenciling and tattooing non-porous silicone skin. The following are some tips from A Pound of Flesh, as well as general tips for silicone skin:

Stencil Application Tips:

  1. Step 1: Apply isopropyl alcohol to a sheet of paper towel. Then wipe the tattoo site with your paper towel to clean it.
  2. Step 2: Soak another sheet of paper towel with isopropyl alcohol. Then run a Speed Stick deodorant directly on the alcohol-soaked paper towel. Hygiene Tip: Never apply the Speed Stick deodorant directly to the tattooable surface.
  3. Step 3: Rub the Speed Stick deodorant and alcohol mixture directly onto the tattoo site.
  4. Step 4: Apply your stencil evenly. Put pressure on it for about 5–10 seconds.
  5. Step 5: Peel away your stencil carefully.
  6. Step 6: Blowdry your freshly applied stencil for 5–10 minutes. Then let it dry fully overnight.

General Silicone Skin Tips

  1. Prep the Surface: Before applying the stencil solution, it can be beneficial to lightly scuff the surface of the practice skin with a fine-grit sandpaper. This creates a slightly textured surface for the stencil solution to grip onto, reducing the chances of smudging.
  2. Less Stencil Solution is More: Unlike human skin which can absorb some of the stencil solution, A Pound of Flesh skin will not. Applying too much solution will make the surface too wet and cause the stencil to slide and smear. Use only a thin, even layer of the solution.
  3. Allow a Long Drying Time: This is the most crucial difference. On human skin, a stencil might need 15-20 minutes to dry before you can start tattooing. On A Pound of Flesh, you need to be much more patient. Many artists recommend applying the stencil and letting it dry for several hours, or even leaving it overnight. This extended drying time allows the stencil ink to set and adhere to the synthetic surface.
  4. Use a Blow Dryer (with caution): Some artists use a blow dryer on a cool setting to speed up the drying process. You should hold it a good distance away and move it around to avoid overheating the silicone, which could cause a negative reaction.
  5. Secure the Stencil: Because of the hands' 3D shape, getting the stencil to lay flat without wrinkling can be a challenge. You may need to cut slits in the stencil paper or use pieces of tape to help it conform to the curves of the hand and fingers.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Smudging: The most common problem. This is almost always due to using too much stencil solution or not allowing enough drying time.
  • The Stencil Won't Stick: This can be because the surface wasn't cleaned properly, a low-quality stencil solution was used, or the surface is too smooth. Trying the light sanding technique can help.
  • Faded Lines: If the stencil doesn't transfer clearly, it could be a sign of a bad stencil print, not enough pressure during application, or a poor-quality stencil paper.

By following these guidelines, you can significantly improve your results and make the most of your silicone practice skins.
